Alliance Francaise relishes acoustic bliss amidst scarcity
On Thursday music lovers braved fuel scarcities that the country is facing to make it to the Sounds of Malawi Acoustic session at Alliance Francaise de Blantyre. The fuel deficiencies could be seen from the spot at a nearby filling station on the night with lengthy queues of vehicles waiting to refuel. And for some, waiting to refill meant enjoying the sounds from Alliance Francaise de Blantyre served by Kukana Kuba Kasambwe as curtainraisers and the headliner Papa Mtume and African Mingoli. The concert delayed to start as the organisers waited for the numbers to improve but eventually it begun 30 minutes later. Alliance Francaise de Blantyre Director Luc Deschamps admitted that the numbers were low due to dry pumps that had restricted people from travel. "People are used to the Thursday nights so, we could not cancel. At least some have made it," Deschamps said. He admitted that the creative industry has been hit hard by fuel shortages that have led to cancellations and loss of income and prayed for the situation to improve. On stage, the two acts served their finest with Kukana Kuba Kasambwe opening the showdown with four numbers before host Mercy Chirwa invited Deschamps to introduce two international experts, Elena Constantinou and Guiomar Alonso Cano, who are in the country as Experts on Demand, to conduct a rapid assessment of Malawi's cultural and creative industries. The assessment, which is part of the United Nations' Technical Assistance to the government focuses on the governance structures and the broader ecosystem for the cultural and creative sector, with the aim of understanding value chains and state of digital transformation among others. "We are excited to be part of Sounds of Malawi and we have been impressed by the sounds from the two groups. Malawi is rich in talent," Alonso Cano said. After Kukana Kuba Kasambwe which has played at Sounds of Malawi several times, came Papa Mtume and African Mingoli. It was also not the first time for Mtume, former Musicians Union of Malawi (Mum) Southern chapter chairperson to star at Sounds of Malawi Acoustic session. The artist in his traditional regalia won the hearts of the audience with his authentic sounds. "I call my music Gosho which means good music from home. We always get good support here which motivates us. People should watch the space for more music because we are in the studio," Mtume said.

12 years after completion, health centre remains shut
By Nelson Gonjani: For residents of Sub- Traditional Authority (STA) Tundulu in Kasungu District, accessing healthcare services can be a long, exhausting and distressing experience. With Kasungu District Hospital located some 15 kilometres (km) away, seeking medical attention remains a challenge for a community that has waited 12 years to see its own health facility opening its doors to them. Chikukula Health Centre, constructed in 2014, stands as a reminder of the community's long wait for accessible healthcare. Although the building has been completed, it remains non-operational because essential supporting infrastructure— including staff houses, toilets, a source of reliable water supply and incinerator for medical waste disposal—is still missing. MVULA—Time has come for us to find a solution For residents, the absence of these facilities means that a health centre that was intended to bring relief closer to home has yet to fulfil its purpose, leaving families to continue covering long distances whenever they need medical attention. One of the residents, Merece Mvula, said the situation was particularly worrying for women seeking maternal healthcare services, as the distance makes accessing antenatal care an additional burden. Mvula said she experienced these difficulties firsthand when she was pregnant and struggling to raise money for transport to attend antenatal appointments at Kasungu District Hospital, the nearest available health facility. "I had to find money for transport to attend antenatal appointments at Kasungu District Hospital because it is the only nearby health facility. When I had no money, I had to do piecework to raise the transport fare, which was not easy for me as an expectant mother," she said. Her experience reflects the difficulties faced by other pregnant women in the area, many of whom must find ways to meet transport costs before accessing essential maternal healthcare services. CHISALE— I will make sure that this facility becomes operational Mvula raised the concern when Kasungu Central Constituency Member of Parliament Chikondi Kampachike Chisale, accompanied by district health officials, visited the facility. "We are required to cover about 15 kilometres from here to Kasungu District Hospital to access healthcare services, which should not be the case. Women are among the most vulnerable, particularly when seeking maternal healthcare services," she said. Mvula explained that the community had hoped that the construction of Chikukula Health Centre would ease the burden of covering long distances to seek treatment. However, despite the completed building, residents continue to face the same difficulties they had hoped the facility would resolve. Mvula said the 12-year wait had left the community wondering how much longer it would take before the health centre could begin serving its intended purpose. "This facility was constructed in 2014 and this year marks about 12 years since its construction, yet it is still not functional. This is negatively affecting our communities. "At times, we fail to address medical conditions that require urgent attention because of the distance we have to cover. The time has come for us to unite and find a lasting solution to this challenge," she said. GOLOMBE—We believe thischallenge can be addressed However, opening the facility requires more than a completed building. Essential supporting infrastructure must be put in place to provide a suitable working environment for healthcare workers and ensure the safe delivery of health services. Kasungu District Director of Health and Social Services Emmanuel Golombe said the absence of essential facilities, including staff houses, toilets, a reliable source of water supply and incinerator, remained a major obstacle to opening the health centre. He also cited lack of coordination between community members and district health officials as one of the factors contributing to the situation. Golombe said the district health office was committed to ensuring that residents access healthcare services closer to their homes. "We are very committed to ensuring that people access healthcare services, but we cannot operate the facility without these essential structures. "We believe that, through the Member of Parliament, this challenge can be addressed using Constituency Development Fund (CDF) resources," he said. Meanwhile, Chisale has pledged to help address the outstanding requirements. "I will make sure that this facility becomes operational through CDF resources. Where necessary, I will also use my personal resources to address the situation," he said. Once operational, Chikukula Health Centre is expected to serve more than 1,000 households in the area, bringing essential healthcare services closer to residents who have endured years of waiting.

Caf hikes annual subventions to K1.2 billion
The Confederation of African Football (Caf) has increased annual subventions to its member associations (MAs) to $700,000 (approximately K1.2 billion) from $200,000. This represents an additional $500,000 to each of the federations. Caf President Patrice Motsepe announced this after a Caf strategy meeting held in Santa Maria, Cape Verde, on Thursday. This means Football Association of Malawi (Fam), alongside 53 other MAs, will get K1.2 billion per year. According to the Caf website, the increased funding is aimed at helping national federations strengthen their operations, improve financial stability and develop football across the continent. The total investment across all the 54 MAs is estimated at $37.8 million, increased from $10.8 million under the previous allocation. This could be an important investment in the future of African football as it would provide better opportunities to develop local talent, improve football structures and grow the game. Fam President Fleetwood Haiya was not readily available for his comment yesterday. Apart from Caf, Fam also gets annual subvention from Fifa, with the world football governing body contributing $1.25 million annually to all associations for operational and running costs. Fam also gets annual subvention from the Malawi Government through the Malawi National Council of Sports. The association was allocated K3 billion in this year's national budget. Sports analyst Parry Chinyama said the financial investment from Caf would boost football development in Africa. "Caf is doing a good job to develop football," he said.

UN agency calls time on El Niño response delays
By Deborah Madeya: The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) has warned that the projected El Niño event could reduce Malawi's cereal harvest by 30 percent in the 2026-27 agricultural season. In its recent publication, 'Southern Africa 2026 El Niño Preparedness Alert', the UN agency says at least four million Malawians will require humanitarian assistance during the 2026- 27 lean season. According to the report, many African countries, including Malawi, respond to disasters rather than prepare for them, a trend that could reverse the food security gains made over the past year. The report places Malawi's preparedness at the 'in readiness' stage and that protocols and plans are in place but anticipatory action has not yet been formally activated. It recommends that agricultural inputs and climate advisories reach communities before planting begins, warning that funding released after October may come too late to prevent crop losses. "Governments, humanitarian and development partners, and regional organizations should use current agricultural gains and available lead time to build reserves, finance and scale coordinated early action and protect livelihoods and essential services," the report reads. OCHA also warns that rising food insecurity is likely to be accompanied by disease outbreaks, acute malnutrition, school dropouts, gender-based violence and child labour. The alert comes as Malawi's National El Niño Preparedness and Response Plan faces a funding gap of K324.8 billion. According to the government, the plan requires K488.5 billion, of which K163.7 billion has been mobilised through existing government and partner commitments. In an interview, Centre for Humanitarian Assistance and Social Protection Executive Director Kenneth Sakala described the projection as worrisome and stressed the need for anticipatory action. Sakala said the government should prioritise replenishing strategic grain reserves as part of its preparations. "In 2015, a smaller shock pushed maize prices up 150 percent and forced ultra-poor households to sell livestock and farm tools assets they never recovered," Sakala said. Meanwhile, agriculture policy expert Taman Nkhono-Mvula has said Malawi needs to diversify beyond maize and grow more drought-tolerant crops to reduce recurrent food shortages. Recently, the Malawi Vulnerability Assessment Committee estimated that 2.6 million households would face food insecurity during the 2026-27 consumption period, representing 14 percent of the country's population.

MPs probe drug theft as hospital stocks dwindle
By Brenda Kayo: The Health Committee of Parliament has launched an investigation into the alleged theft of medicines from public hospitals and weaknesses in the country's drug distribution system amid concerns over critically low medicine availability in health facilities. Committee chairperson Anthony Masamba said the lawmakers had gathered sufficient evidence indicating that medicines were being stolen from public hospitals. Masamba said the investigation would establish the extent of the alleged theft, identify those responsible and uncover weaknesses in the systems meant to ensure medicines reach patients. He added that medicine availability in hospitals stood at 41 percent, while the stock-out rate was 75 percent. "Major referral hospitals across the country are reportedly operating at just 18 percent medicine availability. This further highlights the challenges facing the public healthcare system," Masamba said. He said the committee would summon key stakeholders in the health sector to help establish the causes of medicine shortages and the alleged theft. Those expected to appear before the committee include government officials, pharmaceutical suppliers, the Inspector General of Police and the Anti-Corruption Bureau. Masamba said the investigation would examine weaknesses in the medicine supply chain, pharmacy management, procurement and tendering procedures as well as gaps in the laws and regulations governing the sector. He said the committee had raised concerns that some individuals were supplying medicines to pharmacies that did not exist. "Such practices, if established, could point to serious loopholes in the procurement and distribution of medicines, potentially allowing public resources intended for patient care to be diverted or misused," he said. The committee is also examining concerns about the transportation and delivery of medicines to public hospitals, including reports that some trucks assigned to distribute supplies may not be fulfilling their intended duties. Meanwhile, health rights activist Maziko Matemba has welcomed the inquiry, saying it would help establish the root causes of the problem. "It will also identify gaps in the supply and distribution of medicines in public hospitals," Matemba said.
